Leroy welcome to the site just to let you know keep your 61 pete away from Grenfell he mite try to sell you a rock for it.!!!!!! Skipped heres my 64 same cab as yours different hood ,no center section and long sides
Skipped here is a dash pic of a 58 pete i owned, as far as i no this cab was changed in 1960? or thereabouts and i thought they would have gone with the later hood at the same time! your truck being 61 may have been during the change over and got what was available either way its a neat old pete What points to the doors being later? My knowledge is very limited here & I am just starting to learn the differences, Here are a couple shots that I have of the interior. Skipped just had a good look at your pete, the short hood sides date it late 50,s 280? but the doors are a bit later 281? can you post a dash pic ? Thanks for the info on the engine, I was hoping the pump was swapped on, but it sounds like it may just have been freshend up once, Not that I'm complaining, on the trip home it seemed to motor right along & will probably tow anything I want to hook to it, I doubt I'll ever gross over 30k with it. Thanks Fred, I wish that was my wood pile, but it belongs to the former owner of the truck, I only burn wood in the shop & my pile does not look near that nice, (I'll burn about anything LOL) Skipped just had a good look at your pete, the short hood sides date it late 50,s 280? but the doors are a bit later 281? can you post a dash pic ?
#CUMMINS 230 SMALL CAM 350 FULL#
the upright section of the oilcooler holds the full flow oil filter remove the lid and there is a cartridge filter in there
#CUMMINS 230 SMALL CAM 350 PLUS#
single waterpump belt = early pump 250, 280, 335 oil cooler is to small for 335 but correct for nt 280 nt 290 had later "handbag" waterpump and parrallel nose crankshaft plus a lot of other differances its a littl e hard to be 100percent but imsure its a 280 they were a good engine so if its runnin ok i wouldnt mess with it. Skipped first number on the pump is cpl - o 180 is a nt 280 a nt 280 is similiar in apearance to a 335 which from the pics is what i see. I also like those 2 stacks of wood you have there in the back ground. I love those old narrow nose Petes and you have a good looking one. I can't help ID your engine but hopefully one of the smart guys will show up and tell you. The truck as it sits And the engine in question. Thanks for the welcome Don, If I had to take a guess I would agree that it looks like possible a 290, (first numbers on the pump tag being the CPL) If it is indeed the origonal pump, I'm not sure if I can pot up pics from Photobucket but I'll give it a whirl. Welcome aboard, and we always want pics the more the better, I think you may have a 290 there. 3032068 257514 Only other info I can provide off the top of my head is the engine brake has Jacobs 25b on each unit, & as I stated above the pump looks to be from another unit or removed & repaired a time or two, Any info I can get on this engine would be great, it appears I already have a couple leaks to repair & the more I know about it the better the odds of picking up the right book & parts, Thanks a bunch, PS, If Any pics are needed I can provide that. 10221322 There is also a number cast on the left side of the block towards the back PATT210180 The Tag was still on the pump, (the tag has been painted over at least twice) 60 01T0 The tag is also in place on the turbo but aside from the stamped in numbers it is nearly impossible to read.
First is the engine number I got that was stamped on the left side front of the block.
I went ahead & bought the truck & made the 350 mile trip home, The truck drives good (a little low geard) & seems to make plenty of power, unfortunatly there is no data plate on the accessory drive cover, I am realy curiouse about the engine, the fact it has no after cooler is what got me looking for info on it, (since I'd never seen a 350 with no cooler) After reading several threads on here I think I have gathered enough numbers that the experts here might point me in the right direction. I recently purchased a 1961 Peterbilt 281 that I plan to spiff up a bit & use as a tow rig for when the load is a bit more than I want to hook to the pickup, When I went & looked at the truck I was told the engine was a small cam 350, the owner said that the truck originaly had a 262 & when it got to tired he replaced it with the current engine, This engine came from a truck shop in Sacramento, & was supposidly removed from a newer truck that had been wrecked, I was told this shop inspected the engine & sold it as a good low mile runner, it was purchased & installed in the 281 about 7 years ago & has mostly sat since then.
